AI in medical imaging: What Radiologist Should Know

In the post-pandemic era, artificial intelligence (AI) is revolutionizing healthcare, particularly in medical imaging. To explore this shift, Perceptra Company Limited hosted a seminar in July 2023 titled “From Theory to Practice: Sharing Practical Insights on AI in Clinical Radiology,” led by Dr. Arunnit Boonrod from Khon Kaen University. The seminar focused on the evolution of AI from traditional programming to machine learning and deep learning, highlighting its applications in radiology such as classification, prediction, object detection, and segmentation. Despite past fluctuations in AI interest, the technology has significantly advanced, surpassing human performance in certain tasks by 2015. Dr. Boonrod emphasized the concept of an “AI copilot” in radiology, suggesting that AI can serve as a valuable assistant rather than a replacement for radiologists. She encouraged a positive outlook towards AI, suggesting that while it may disrupt the field, it presents more opportunities than threats. Emphasizing adaptability, she compared AI’s impact to the earlier transition from analog to digital X-rays, concluding that expertise in the field will mitigate any significant negative impacts.
